New Extensions, New Routine! Let’s talk maintenance…
In the shower: Make sure you are washing your scalp around the wefts carefully but thoroughly. You want to avoid build-up forming at the base and in between the sewn weft area. Condition the extensions well, avoid the beaded area, detangle your extensions while the conditioner is in with a wide tooth comb. Remember to keep a light touch on top of your extensions as you comb/brush so you are not pulling on your scalp. ( Make sure to use a professional shampoo and conditioner, sulfate-free, wash 1-2 times per week.
Styling: Apply leave-in conditioner, detangle hair, follow with a styling serum, heat protectant and oil on mid-shaft to ends. Make sure when you dry your extensions you don’t flip your hair upside down, make sure the air of the blowdryer is blowing in the direction of the hair follicle. Always dry the wefts of the extensions well, it’s important to ensure you dry the extensions well at their base in order to prevent the hair from swelling. NEVER go to bed with wet hair.
Going to bed: Brush/detangle your hair every night before bed. Never go to bed with wet hair. Make sure you put your hair in a low pony tail or braid. Do not do a high pony or a bun. It’s important to not add tension to your hair while you sleep. Investing in a silk pillowcase is beneficial.
Let’s talk products: I can't stress enough the importance of professional hair care. Your extensions are a luxury and it’s important to treat them as such. Shampoo, conditioner, heat protectant, and hair serum/oils are essential. Remember, your extensions lack access to natural scalp oils, so moisturizing/oiling them is a must.
Brushing: It is important to brush/detangle your hair multiple times a day. All that extra hair will cause extra tangles. It’s important to brush before and after sleeping, after exercising, or if you’ve had your hair up in a ponytail, its good to brush it when you take it down. This will help avoid matting, especially at the base of your neck. Always make sure you are “holding” on to the wefts by your scalp, and that you are not brushing your extensions at the scalp, that will cause pulling on the beads and thread.
Now let’s talk Summertime: We all love a good tan in the summer and lounging around soaking up all the sun. Unfortunately extensions DO NOT. Make sure to shield your extensions from the sun, chlorine-water(pools), and saltwater to prevent discoloration. Make sure to use a mineral sunscreen, regular sunscreens WILL turn your hair orange/pink, I guarantee it. It’s something that cannot be fixed the only solution is to purchase new hair. Wear your hair in a bun off your shoulders, and make sure to rinse it off immediately if it gets wet.
